Lucy and the Football
By Tom Benthin
For too many years, Democrats in Congress have been under the delusion that their Republican counterparts would someday have an epiphany. Democrats imagined that their MAGA fever would break and they would finally oppose Trump, defend the Constitution, come to their senses. Like Charlie Brown, no matter how many times Democrats landed on their back, they continued to dream about kicking that football. They’re still at it. Chuck Schumer. Adam Schiff. And more. Fantasizing instead of fighting.
We rightfully see this as absurd. But we need to face up to our own delusion. The tantalizing kick of the football for us has been the idea that we could get Democrats to realize the danger of fascism and fight back. It’s time to wake up. They’re not going to do it.
Yes, some are. AOC and Bernie just got 34,000 people to show up in Denver. We have some leaders with fight. And we will need many more. But we can’t wait. As Anat Shenker-Osorio says, we cannot vote our way to a democracy. The only way forward is for us to take direct action.
Congress cannot save us now. The courts, which cannot enforce their decisions, will not save us. It’s up to us.
Our job is to build a movement of hundreds, then thousands, of peaceful protestors. People, like you and me, who will confront and oppose the fascists and defeat them. Together, we can free America from tyranny.
What’s more, by building our movement, we can not only rescue ourselves, we will discover new fighters who can replace those Democrats who aren’t up to the task.
This is Sonoma county, the home of Charlie Brown and Lucy. We know better than to land on our backs one more time. Let’s see through our delusion that Congressional Democrats will save us and put our energy where it’s needed right now: thwarting the will of the Trump regime, bringing down his lawless rule, and returning our country to its citizens.
There’s a lot of work to do and the hour is late. Let’s get going.
Direct Actions
Free America from Tyranny
It’s time for us to build this movement together. There is a role for each of us to play. Our task is to build a large, broad coalition of citizens who will confront and oppose fascism both through actions and in their daily lives. Here are some ways to get started now.
Attend a protest rally. Rallies are popping up all over - see our calendar and action listings to find the one(s) that’s a fit for you. Be peaceful, but be visible and loud. We need to let everyone know that we’re in danger, now - and we are here to fight back. Find the right rally for you in our calendar.
Join us to Circle the Square. Our Circle the Square protests are happening each weekend at the Old Courthouse Square in Santa Rosa. Join us on Sunday, March 30th at 3:00. You can sign up here.
Take the lead on forming neighborhood or cafe gatherings. Go local. Invite people in your immediate neighborhood to get together, get to know each other, and plan actions. Meet in your home (easier for confidential conversations) or at a cafe (move visible for drawing others to you). If you’re willing to lead, write to us here at Indivisiblesoco@gmail.com (copy and paste) and tell us where you live**. We’ll help put out the word that there’s a new group forming there.
Join Bob’s music group. Bob Hahn is helping put together a group to bring music and singing to protest events - and to get together to play for the sheer joy and pleasure of it (which is also a blow against fascism, btw). If you’re interested in joining, let him know at rfh511@gmail.com.
Come to an Activists’ Support and Brainstorm meeting. There are two this week, Wednesday at 10:30 and Thursday at 6:00. Find out more in our calendar.
More actions coming soon. The pivot from constituent pressure to direct action is a big one for us. We’re moving as fast as we can, so expect new actions to pop up. If you have ideas for actions, write to us [need email address]. And if you want to help lead actions, let us know!
** New Group Forming in the Junior College Neighborhood in Santa Rosa! Interested? Copy and paste into your email dransom391@gmail.com and send your name and address.
Making Our Calls
3.24.25
CALL YOUR SENATORS: IT’S TIME FOR SCHUMER TO STEP DOWN
Chuck Schumer betrayed the nation, as well as House Democrats, this past week when he capitulated on the MAGA no-strings-for-Elon budget. Democrats can’t oppose Trump/Musk or win with with a weak and ineffective leader. Please call your senators and ask them to force Schumer to step down as minority leader. Until he does, don’t donate to any of the national Democratic organizations (individual races or state efforts are fine). Thanks!
CALL YOUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS: OPPOSE THE SAVE ACT
The SAVE Act pretends to be a solution to the non-existent problem of “voter fraud”. Instead, it is a MAGA bill to keep Democrats from being able to vote by making it difficult or impossible for voters to register. We need every single Democrat to oppose it.
(To learn more about the SAVE Act, read about it here).
Please call your members of Congress and say:
I’m calling to ask the senator/congressman to oppose the SAVE Act, which is designed to keep Democrats from being able to vote.
CALL YOUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS TO FIGHT FOR THE CLIMATE
Trump is launching the largest assault on climate and environment protections in US history. Trump’s EPA announced it would repeal 31 cornerstone environmental protections, Trump is doing this at the behest of corporate polluters and billionaires who paid to get him elected.
Please call your members of Congress and say:
Please fight to defeat the actions of Trump’s EPA. This will take vigilance and courage from everyone in Congress who values clean air, clean water, and a safer climate. I am depending on you.
EXTRA ACTION: Besides calling your elected officials, please pass it on to your family and friends. Our elected officials need to hear this from EVERYONE!
Big Oil must pay for the havoc it has caused!
Big Oil is trying to get Congress to give them blanket immunity for their climate crimes that lead to disasters like California’s devastating wildfires. Many cities and states are filing law suits or passing superfund laws to make the fossil fuel industry pay for climate damages. Donald Trump and his MAGA minions are trying to let Big Oil off the hook.
Call your Members of Congress and say:
Don’t let Big Oil off the hook for the devastating damage they do. They have known for years that fossil fuels cause climate change but have fought to cover it up while they raked in profits. Make them pay. Oppose the Big Oil bailout.

Don't let Newsom and the CPUC destroy rooftop solar!
The Newsom administration is proposing to break residents' solar contracts, slash solar credits, and slap on a solar tax. These draconian measures would apply to all solar customers who signed up for solar before April 2023.
Call your state senator and assembly member and say:
Do not let the CPUC and the Governor destroy rooftop solar. The 3 big utilities claim that rooftop solar doesn’t pay its way and therefore drives up the electrical costs for non solar users to cover the shortfall. This is not true. Rooftop solar has relieved pressure on California’s grid, saving all of us thousands of dollars of grid expansion. Rooftop solar also takes pressure off the grid during high heat periods, thus preventing rolling brownouts. Finally rooftop solar curbs greenhouse gases.

The onslaught of news, the chaos coming out of the White House – it’s all meant to overwhelm us. It’s a deliberate strategy to sow confusion and make us believe we are powerless to fight back. The antidote: Coming together in the community to process what’s happening, to sift through what’s important and what’s just noise, and coalesce around strategies for fighting back.
Join Indivisible co-founders Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin each week, as we carve out an hour to discuss what’s happening and – more importantly – what’s the plan.
